My Advice for Getting BIG

My name is Andy, and I have been bodybuilding for three years now.
I have crucial advice for anyone who takes this seriously and is willing to learn.
If you are like me at all, you probably buy all sorts of body building magazines.
Well, it is because of them that I wasted 2 years of training time!
The work out plans are set up for professional body builders, not regular people, so you learn nothing from them, not to mention every other page is just an add for some supplement!
A book called Arnold Schwarzenegger's Encyclopedia of Body Building changed my life. It is as big as a phone book and has everything you need to know from beginnng bodybuilding to pro competition training, from nutrition to looking for the right gym and work out partner. This book has every little detail, which is great.
I also want to warn younger beginning body builders of supplements. If there is one thing I have learned is that it is how you train that matters, not what supplements you take. I didn't realize that until I ended up suffering the consequences from taking certain supplements. Just because they sell it and advertise it all over doesn't mean it is safe for you. As long as you train hard and eat right you will get where you want to be!

The Swartz Encyclo is a great ref to bb, but I do offer one very basic rule of thumb most seem to not know. I thought I was a hard gainer for fiften years give or take until I caught on to this one thing. The rule is Stimulate, recover and grow. There are really 3 phases to building muscle: pump it at the gym, then aloow it to heal, THEN ALLOW IT TO GROW A DAY OR TWO before hitting that slab again. Stimulation, compensation and OVERcompensation. I gained 5 lbs of flesh the first year practicing this and went from 155 to 185 lean in five years....age 36 to 41!! LET IT GROW! |

(User Info | Send a Message) | | I don't know where you got you info from Andy but your so wrong. Flex magazine is a great resource for anyone who is seriouisly tring to bodybuild. Supplements are great also. You have too do your research and find out which one's work and which one's are gimmicks. And remember that they are just what they say they are "supplements" they are suppliments to a good diet. The problem that i see with todays new comers is their lack of nutritional knowledge. I have found that consistant proper dieting is the most crucial part of sucessful bodybuilding. I am 5'11 225lbs. Up from 180lbs 5yrs ago. I owe it all to my hard work training in the gym 6 days a week and my consistant proper eating. People have an eating problem and is usally the problem behind not growing. The workout techniques discussed in the magazines are informational and should be applied in the way that they help. They are usally difficult to follow and very hard to complete, but that's what seperates the men from the boys if you ask me. That is why only ther strong survive. It's not supposed to be quick and easy and if it doesn't hurt then it don't work if you ask me. If i dread doing them then i know that they are important and i will grow if i complete them. People usally resort to abusing supplements because they don't want to take the time to do it right or are impatient, they are not taking the time to start slow and do it right the first time. People don't start bodybuilding because they want to wait 3-5 yrs to see big gains, they want it now and fast. 100% failure rate. Supplements such as Creatine and andros are helpful in breaking plateaus. But, can be miss leading and disheartening because you get strong and big but you lose it after you stop taking them. The object is to get strong but when you come off you are bigger and stronger than when you started but you won't be as strong as when you stopped. and if you start this way than you can see how this can be a bad thing. Now suppliments such as aminos, Multi's and glutamine are crucial to everday gains and maintence of your daily routine. Stick with it and try hard evertime. Remeber to eat alot and to get to hitting it hard at the Gym. Next time your in the gym, look at the faces of the big guys going through their routines and then look at the regulars and they are having fun talking and doing klight exercises. Then you'll see the difference and your work should be cut out for you. EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT. 7 small meals aday. The best advice is learn how to eat and learn what a proper workout split looks like. And when you leave the gym if you feel as though you didn't do anything then you propbably haven't This can all be learned by reading Flex magazine. |

(User Info | Send a Message) http:// | | as you can see by my nickname i am a huge believer in arnold and his training principles. i am a fitness instructor and part time bodybuilder. in the gym i work in i see people reading the muscle mags and trying there routines with out rerward. i try to tell them there a waste of time except for articles on events and stuff like that, but they think that if a programme is in a magazine with jay culter on the front ,it must work for them too. i too have arnolds body bulding encyclopedia and find it much more of use than muscle mags. arnold must know what he is talking about if he was able to develop the body he did back in the seventees with little or no supplementation. arnie is a legand and his book is excelent too. for a good read, check out his autobiography ''the education of a body builder'' it has details of his early life, as a body builder, his training and of his advice to other body builders and wannabes alike. excellent stuff. |

(User Info | Send a Message) | | Hmmm. So how do you like doing 5 sets of exercise for every body part? I imagine your workouts last 1 - 1 1/2 hours. I know your body is totally pumped after the workout (muscles full of blood), and you are probably experiancing some gains right now.
The real question is how long can your body sustain this intensity? How long before your body reaches it's limit, and stops growing?
If more reps, and sets are better than why doesn't Arnold say to do 60 sets, or 80 sets of 100 reps? Because the reality is that more is not better, and that would be gross over training. Your body only has so much recovery ability, and if you over train your body for too long you will eventually deplete your body of it's natural recovery ability, and start suffering in many parts of your body.
Doctors stated that Mario Lemeux's disease was due specifically to overtraining. Here is a guy that wasn't a body builder that depleted his system on a continual basis, and didn't allow for recovery.
Genetics, age, diet, and allowing your body plenty of time to recover is really the key factors to "getting big".
If all it took was applying Arnolds book to your workout routine then we should have about 10,000 Arnold look alikes walking around. The truth of the matter is that we don't, and many people fall far short of an Arnold like body.
I recommend learning how the body works, reading about how muscles actually grow (from the medical science field), and then applying a routine that fits your own body's recoverability mode. Some people have the ability to recover quicker than others. Learn your body, read scientific facts on the body, and eat healthy.

I am a vegetarian, no dairy and some fish and every once in a while chicken. I am not trying to get really big, but I want to be really toned. I have not achieved that. My shoulders, biceps are cool, but my triceps suck. My legs are somewhat defined until you get to my thighs and butt. I have a somewhat big butt and I want to turn some of it to muscle. How do I do that if you dont mind me asking. Also I want to agree with the guy that said you have to learn your body because everyone's body does not react in the same manner, and having a healthy diet, drinking lots of water is very important. Thank you. |
